A commonwealth soldier with a German “Butterfly” bomb. This container was in fact one of the first elaborate cluster bomb, releasing hundreds of “butterflies”. Some small charges propelled by a small mecanical system were released at a set altitude. These small bombs were then dispersed on a wide area.
